The Breast Course for Nurses is an NPO aimed at equipping primary health care providers with the knowledge and skills required to manage patients with breast problems. Although the course is aimed at primary health care nurses, we encourage any medical professionals to attend.
In many places in Southern Africa, the first contact for women (and men) with breast complaints, is a nurse in a primary clinic. There is little formal breast training for these nurses. This course was started to aid in the upskilling of these primary health care providers.
The course was first started in 2012 by Dr Jenny Edge along with a few nurses from a local hospital. The course was well received by these nurses and slowly it grew to become a more formal course. In 2014, Sr Lieske Wegelin joined Dr Edge and assisted with running the Breast Course for Nurses. This allowed it to expand and register as an NPO.
The Breast Course for Nurses has completed courses in various countries in Africa including South Africa (Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban and Post Elizabeth), Namibia (Windhoek and Ongwediva), Zimbabwe (Harare, Bulawayo and Marondera) and Malawi (Lilongwe). Our material has also been used in South America and Eastern Timor.
At present, due to COVID, we are unable to run our traditional courses. We are involved with several projects that will see much our of material put online. As the projects evolve, we will provide direct links to them.
